HB 1824 -- OFFICIAL STATE DESSERT SPONSOR: Schlottach COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Special Committee on Tourism by a vote of 9 to 0. This bill designates the ice cream cone as the official state dessert. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2009, FY 2010, and FY 2011. PROPONENTS: Supporters say the ice cream cone has a historical connection to the state since it was invented by Stephen Sullivan, a founder of the City of Sullivan, for the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. The cornucopia cone, a walkaway, edible container, was a huge success that is still in use around the world. There are 35 ice cream manufacturers in Missouri which are responsible for many jobs. Ice cream manufacturing impacts the dairy industry, and many restaurants sell locally produced ice cream for dessert. Designating the ice cream cone as the official state dessert could increase tourism with many communities having ice cream festivals. Businesses could display special emblems noting the historical significance of the ice cream cone. Cones are beneficial to the environment because they can be eaten and aren't thrown away like a paper cup. Testifying for the bill were Representative Schlottach; Kayleigh Hecht; Garrett Floyd; Jacob G. Frost; Kjia Zuroweste; Elise Floyd; Elise Kostial; Missouri Dairy Association; Missouri Restaurant Association; and Kevin Garrett, Cold Stone Creamery. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.Copyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
