Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HB 2224 -- CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR PEACE OFFICERS

SPONSOR: Jones (117)

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Crime Prevention and Public Safety by a vote of 8 to 0.

Currently, peace officers who make traffic stops are required to
receive annual training concerning the prohibition of race
profiling. This bill changes the training requirement to three
hours within the law enforcement continuing education three-year
reporting period.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2009, FY 2010, and
FY 2011.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the statutes require peace
officers to attend a one-hour training course regarding racial
profiling every year. The bill will provide for better
instruction and training by requiring peace officers to attend a
three-hour course every three years.

Testifying for the bill were Representative Jones (117); Missouri
Police Chiefs' Association; and Missouri Sheriffs Association.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
