Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1792 -- Licensed Professional Counselors

Sponsor:  Cooper (155)

This bill defines "assessment," "consulting," "counseling
treatment interventions," "diagnosis," "referral," and "research"
as they relate to licensed professional counselors.

The definition of "practice of professional counseling" is
revised to include individual, group, marriage, and family
counseling and psychotherapy; assessment; crisis intervention;
diagnosis and treatment of persons with mental disorders;
guidance and consultation to facilitate more effective
intrapersonal, educational, and vocational development;
utilization of functional assessment; consulting; research; and
referral. Restrictions are placed on these practices to apply to
those persons appropriately trained who are licensed as a
professional counselor or under a licensed professional
counselor's supervision.

Any person licensed, applying for licensure, or certain
individuals under approved supervision must have completed
acceptable education and training as specified by the Committee
for Professional Counselors.
