      Whereas, the nation's land grant university system was founded during the administration of Abraham Lincoln and has provided most of the agricultural research accomplished in the United States; and

 

            Whereas, land grant universities continue to play a vital role in agricultural research and the dissemination of those research results to farmers and consumers; and

 

            Whereas, federal funding for land grant universities has been waning; and

 

            Whereas, federal and state governments are facing increased financial deficits due to declining revenues and the current recession; and

 

            Whereas, the Missouri General Assembly recognizes these financial challenges:

 

            Now, therefore, be it resolved that the members of the House of Representatives of the Ninety-fifth General Assembly, First Regular Session, the Senate concurring therein, hereby urge Congress to recognize the importance of land grant agricultural research in the future of the global food supply and at a minimum, continue current funding and where appropriate, increase funding supports for agricultural research and extension; and

 

            Be it further resolved that the Chief Clerk of the Missouri House of Representatives be instructed to prepare properly inscribed copies of this resolution for the Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture, the leadership of the United States Congress, the agricultural committees of each state legislature, and each member of the Missouri Congressional delegation.
