COMMITTEE
HB 1972 -- ROSA PARKS HIGHWAY
CO-SPONSORS: Gunn, Curls, Thompson(72), Troupe, Wilson(42),
Murray, Carter, Shelton, Riley, Boykins, Dougherty
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on
Transportation by a vote of 21 to 0.
This bill names a portion of Interstate 55, one mile south of
Lindbergh Boulevard to Butler Hill Road, as the "Rosa Parks
Highway."
FISCAL NOTE: Cost to State Highway Fund of $2,784 in FY 2001,
and $0 in FY 2002 and FY 2003.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that Rosa Parks reminds us of the
power of one individual to act as a change agent. Not all of us
are going to change the course of the civil rights movement, but
all of us have the ability to create change within our own
spheres of influence. Enshrining Rosa Parks' name on a stretch
of Highway 55 would remind drivers of that message every day on
their way to work and back home again.
Testifying for the bill were Representative Gunn; and Anti--
Defamation League.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
