Biography

Representative Michael Johnson, a Democrat, represents Jackson County (District 23) in the Missouri House of Representatives. He was first elected in November 2020 and is now serving his third two-year term, having been re-elected in November 2024. Johnson currently serves as the Chair of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus and holds the position of Ranking Member on two House committees.

A man of distinction who became politically awakened in his youth, Johnson made a conscious decision early on to build a legacy rooted in public service, leadership, and philanthropy. His commitment to transforming lives is reflected in his dedication to both legislative progress and grassroots community engagement.

Before his time in office, Johnson worked as an insurance agent and later founded his own business, Johnson Hazley Agency, LLC. The entrepreneurial spark was encouraged by his uncle, the late Charles A. Hazley, a respected Kansas City Councilman who served from 1971 to 1991. Johnson also has extensive experience in urban development and has contributed to research efforts focused on expanding broadband technological systems in underserved and underrepresented communities.

He proudly served four years in the United States Army, where he became an Expert Infantryman in Urban Warfare. His military foundation was built through his participation in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) during high school and college. He is a graduate of Philander Smith University in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he earned a degree in Business Management.

Johnson attended Northeast Law and Military Magnet School in Kansas City. He serves on the boards of Enable KC, Impact Boys to Men, and the American Legion Wayne Miner Post 149. He is also an active member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

Johnson is a devoted father to three children—Tamara, Michael, and Mikia—and a proud grandfather to his 14-year-old granddaughter, Taelyn. Whether through legislation, mentorship, or civic engagement, his life’s work is dedicated to making lasting change and lifting up the people of Missouri’s 23rd District.
