Rep. Galen Higdon, a Republican, represents Buchanan and Platte Counties (District 11) in the Missouri House of Representatives. He was elected to his first two-year term in November 2010.
In addition to his legislative duties, Rep. Higdon is retired after a 30-year career as a deputy for the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department. During his career, Galen was elected vice president of the Missouri Deputy Sheriffs Association by his peers.
Rep. Higdon is a member of the St. James Catholic Parish. He is active with the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph Host Lions Club, and is a member of the National Rifle Association. Rep. Higdon also is a member of FOP Lodge #3 in St. Joseph.
Rep. Higdon is a 1973 graduate of Benton High School.
Born May 30, 1954 in St. Joseph, Rep. Higdon currently resides there with his wife, Lou Anne. They have three children, Monica, Andrea and Emily.
Allows law enforcement officers to establish police lines or barricades when certain emergency situations may cause the congregation of persons in public areas
Provides that certain mandatory minimum sentences may be discretionary and creates provisions when a person is eligible for a parole hearing
Requires a crime inquiry and inspection report for every towing where a law enforcement officer is involved, regardless of whether the towing is initiated by a law enforcement officer or requested by another party
Requires the Amber Alert System Oversight Committee to adopt criteria to expand the Amber Alert System to provide peace officer safety alerts
Establishes the Fair Fare Passenger Safety Act that prohibits any person operating a motor vehicle for compensation from using a hand-held wireless device
Requires driver's education for all driver's license applicants who have never held a driver's license issued by the state of Missouri or any other state or territory of the United States or foreign country
Establishes the Missouri Patient Safety in Radiologic Imaging and Radiation Therapy Act
Modifies provisions related to disability benefits for members of the Missouri Department of Transportation and Highway Patrol Employees' Retirement System
Establishes the Justice Safety Valve Act that provides judges with discretion to depart from mandatory minimum sentences
Proposes a constitutional amendment to allow an additional license fee to go to the "Driver's Education Training Fund"
